The local area network (LAN), which used to have FDDI, ATM, tokens and interfaces, is now almost entirely replaced by Ethernet. Traditional Ethernet works in a half duplex transmission mode on the public transmission media. The network stations can either send or receive data at the same time, but cannot send and receive data at the same time. The reason why the half duplex transmission mode works is the collision of frames sent by the site on the public transmission media. This frame collision effect not only limits the transmission bandwidth of the site, but also constitutes a collision domain that restricts the transmission range, greatly affecting the transmission distance of the transmission media.



With the development of Ethernet technology, the emergence of switched and full duplex Ethernet overcame the weakness of traditional Ethernet in sharing public transmission media and half duplex transmission, and realized the function of site exclusive transmission media and receiving and transmitting data at the same time.





The super five cabling can meet the requirements of transmitting 1000 bit Ethernet. According to the 802.3z standard issued by IEEE in 1998, each of the four pairs of 1000BASEX super five cabling must be used for receiving and transmitting. There are still limitations in the application of switched and full duplex Ethernet. According to IEEE 802.3ab (1000ABSET) standard issued in 2000, Category 6 cabling has two pairs of wire to send and two pairs of wire to receive, which makes it easier to apply switched and full duplex Ethernet.




There is a problem about the comprehensive cost of cabling and network equipment. Although the six categories of cabling products are higher than the super five categories of cabling products in the near future, the network equipment and interface equipment are cheaper, and the comprehensive cost is worth it.
